    What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is used to repair a tooth where the damage or decay is beyond what a standard filling can fix. If the root of the tooth is still healthy, a dental crown is a great way to restore your smile.

Dental crowns are ceramic caps that are used to replace the entire visible area of the tooth above the gum line. They sit overtop of the remaining healthy part of the tooth, preserving it against future damage. They’re a great solution whether the issue is a cracked tooth or damage due to a cavity.

In the case of partial crowns, the ceramic piece is sculpted to fit part of the surface of a tooth (see below).

    CEREC: dental crowns in a
    single visit

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This technology gives us the ability to create a molded and fitted dental crown in a single visit, and has been successfully used for over 20 years.

At Capital Dental Centre our CEREC technology uses both computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). These are used to digitally replicate a patient’s tooth in high detail so we can design and produce the best possible fit for a custom porcelain crown.

CEREC technology gives our patients their natural smile back quickly and effectively while preserving as much of the existing tooth enamel as possible.

    Partial crowns: inlays and onlays

CEREC technology can also be used to create partial crowns, known as inlays or onlays. These are a great option when there is too much damage for a filling but not quite enough for a full dental crown.
